Please take the time to watch this interview of Khalil Gibran Muhammad (author of A Condemnation of Blackness) with Bill Moyers! It’s entitled Facing our Racial Past, and focuses around the historical truth of the 4th of July in contrast to it’s representation of ideological values.
Muhammad beautifully enumerates the hypocritical lifestyles of the ‘founding fathers’, how that reflects upon our constitution and what new meanings this evokes, as well as how the underlying motivations of today’s many racist laws connect back to the time of the founding of the United States. A stalwart proponent of the importance of history in this science-obsessed age, Muhammad pulls from his detailed knowledge of American history and race relations to bring a new light to many contentious issues in modern American politics which the layperson (or not…) today is often ignorant of.
Needless to say, he is am impressive speaker and I think we would do well if more people listened to or read his words.
